Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayern Munich? For us more like ADIDAS vs. PUMA

Last night (Saturday of course) the Champions League Final took place. Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich were the contestants who’d made it all the way to that final match, so it was clear that a German side would win the cup. It’s also blatantly obvious that we don’t really care.

While both of us here at DANDY DIARY used to be childhood supporters of the BVB (Borussia Dortmund), the most successful club in Germany in the mid 1990s, we now have different hobbies keeping us busy: Alcohol, girls, and fashion (in that order, precisely).

Nowadays, that also used to be different (#MarioBasler), alcohol and girls are only attributed minor roles in professional football. The latest blow was Sylvie Van der Vaart’s departure to join the billionaire’s club. That’s why we’re going to take a closer look at the final from a fashion perspective:

The opponents are black/yellow versus red/blue – especially: PUMA vs. ADIDAS.

The latter matchup is substantially more interesting than color combinations depending on fluctuating trends. That’s because ADIDAS and PUMA are both based in the horrific shithole Herzogenaurach and were both founded by brothers Rudolf and Adolf Dassler. After WWII the brothers went their separate ways and have been competitors ever since. Wikipedia says: “Adolf and Rudolf Dassler have supposedly not spoken to each other until they died. Business dialogue was handled through middlemen.”

We love stuff like that. We also really like both brands: PUMA, as well as ADIDAS have managed to acquire certain fashion competences as well and incorporate them into sub brands. That’s great, too.
Sports and fashion are a very now and a very fantastic combination anyway. Just like arguing, that’s always en vogue and good for business.

Despite all this we were siding with our heroes from the old days – BVB – chanting promisingly: “You’ll never walk alone!”
It didn’t help much, obviously: But regardless of Bayern winning, we’ll continue to wear both PUMA and ADIDAS. We’re not hardliners like that.
